  23. Try this. Make a copy of the polys to be extruded/smooth shifted in 
  24. another layer.
  25. On the copy, flip the polys and rename them with the new surface name.
  26. Do the extrude/smooth shift on the copy but use negative number for 
  27. extent of course because the plys are flipped and don't forget to 
  28. change the options panel so you will get double sided polys.
  29. Select both layers and cut and paste.

  31. You will have twice as many polys than you need but the ones facing the 
  32. "outside" which will render will be the proper suface names
  33.  
  34. That's where I would start to figure this out.
